This morning, we decided to take advantage of the rain (22mm in the rain gauge overnight till 7:30am) and do some more planting. This garden bed had been prepared by growing green manure which had subsequently been slashed, then covered by dark plastic (spare weed matting) for 2 weeks. The bed is 122cm at widest, 240cm at longest. We chose to put the rockmelon in this bed, as it has the lowest soil level. Since the Gardening Australia website says that everything tries to eat the melons, our plan is to have fine netting we can place over the rim of the planter without squashing the vine.
The other plants were added based on (a) what else we thought might fit under the netting, and (b) what other seeds we happened to have. We were also keen to get away from monoculture planting and push towards thick, rich varied crops like we see in other people's pictures.
Note: the seeds we used for broccoli, cauliflower and crimson globe beetroot were fairly old (Aug 2008 expiry) so are planted without great expectations.
